Smells and fragrances play such a large role in our daily lives and can contribute to all areas of life: emotional, professional, health and more. Our sense of smell is the strongest of the five senses and is able to affect us deeply and influence brain activity. Olfactory bulbs are directly connected to parts of the brain that process emotions, memories and learning. "This is one of the reasons why so often something that we smell will trigger a memory or remind us of something or someone," says Beverley Hawkins, owner of West Coast Institute of Aromatherapy in Vancouver. "A simple inhalation of an aroma can cause many changes in the body." These "changes" can include increased memory retention, reduced anxiety, increased energy and heightened libido just to name a few.

With this in mind, at Soapworks we choose the scents for our products very carefully and very purposefully. We tend to lean towards pure essential oils or plant-based fragrances that are known to uplift, calm, ease tension or influence moods as well asdeliver maximum benefits to the skin. For example several of our rich, soothing treatments contain neroli oil not only because of its ability to repair and rejuvenate skin but also due to its calming nature and mood-enhancing capabilities. We use clementine essential oil in certain creams/lotions  because it imparts important vitamins and minerals to the skin, however the scent is also known to reduce negative effects of stress and lift spirits. Vanilla's sweet aroma promotes relaxation as it soothes sensitive, irritated skin while peppermint's punch is invigorating, increases pain tolerance and is valued for its antibacterial properties. Rosemary stimulates hair growth and battles dandruff as it mentally uplifts and enhances memory while Rose fights bacteria on the skin as well as eases depression symptoms.  We use only the good stuff: the scents that will make you feel happy/soothed/fabulous so that you feel happy/soothed/fabulous when using our products!

So stop and smell the products, the smells are there for a reason! Take note of which aromas bring you happiness, which bring you peace and relief....and surround yourself with them. Scents in our day-to-day lives have such a huge impact. By becoming more aware of how fragrances affect you personally, you're taking a step towards enhancing your health and well-being.
